Super Live-Concert April Snow, which made big news as a real-life large-scale outdoor concert doubling as one of the sets for the movie April Snow, was held at the open theater of Yonsei University last Sunday, 24 April. The concert which drew screams from a 6,000-strong audience and featured Korea’s best musicians began at 6.30pm and lasted for about 4 hours.
The scenes filmed for April Snow had In-soo (played by Bae Yong Joon) directing the lighting for a large-scale outdoor concert together with Kwang-il, the chief of the lighting team. In the movie, Bae Yong Joon displays his skills on the lighting console and other lighting equipment, thanks to his training before filming. He studied lighting for the scene even before filming by purchasing ‘Stage Lighting Text’. He also received special guidance from Lee Heung-won, the best lighting director in Korea, through visiting real concert stages several times. Most of the filming that day were done at the lighting console booth in front of the audience seats. The audience's reaction was made all the more real by the fact that they were not only filming a movie but were watching a real concert at the same time.
The concert drew great attention from the media because it broke ticket reservation records even in the midst of a long-term slump in the industry. It even attracted a large number of people to buy concert souvenirs and on-site tickets even before the start of the concert. The main concert began with an opening statement by CHOI Eun-kyoung, the famous host, and a powerful performance by Rage Bone, the leader of independent bands at 6.30 pm.
A 'Making Of' Special for the movie April Snow, which has never been released, was shown at the concert, drawing a collective sigh from the audience who empathised with the story of the star-crossed lovers played by Bae Yong Joon and Son Ye Jin in the film. The 'Making Of' Special was followed by performances from Position, Loveholic, LIM Tae-kyoung, and M.
Jewerly, SG Wanna be, and Clazziquai next took the stage. CHO Sung-mo, the king of ballad, gave the finale performance amidst a dreamlike setting of red flowers. CHO Sung-mo received a warm applause from the audience when he said, “It is great to have a performance with Bae Yong Joon, who I met in the music video of my 4th album. I wish everything will be great on the shooting of the movie April Snow.”
Even though there were some inconveniences due to the filming for the movie, the audience enjoyed the concert. Bae Yong Joon thanked the audience after the concert, “Thank you for watching the concert for a long time even in this chilly weather. It was great that we could share this moment and this space for quite a long time. Now, it’s late and I hope everybody goes home well.” He added, “I’m very happy that I can use all the profit from the super live-concert, April Snow, for good works like charity.”
The day before the concert, about 4,000 people from all over Asia including 2,600 locals visited the set location of April Snow where Bae Yong Joon was rehearsing for his scenes. He waved to the audience from time to time, and he got enormous screams from them when he took photos of some of them. Those who attended the event had their expectations of the movie April Snow raised while they were watching Bae Yong Joon’s rehearse for the concert. It was clear they couldn't bear to leave at the end of three hours.
Production for April Snow is about 70% completed and is expected to be released simultaneously in about 10 Asian countries this September.
