Singapore, 30 June 2005 – Acclaimed Chinese director Chen Kaige’s eagerly-anticipated swordplay fantasy blockbuster, THE PROMISE, will be unveiled in Singapore on 22 December. THE PROMISE will be jointly distributed by Encore Films and Golden Village Pictures in Singapore.
Though currently in post-production, THE PROMISE has already generated tremendous buzz in the industry. At the recently-concluded Cannes International Film Festival, the blockbuster was snapped up by international buyers, including the Weinstein Brothers’ newly-formed Weinstein Company, which will be distributing the film (together with IDG New Media) in several territories including America, England and Australia.
With a budget of US$35 million, THE PROMISE is the most expensive Chinese film to date, and boasts an all-star Asian cast that includes Korean superstar Jang Dong-kun (TAEGUKGI), award-winning Japanese actor Hiroyuki Sanada (TWILIGHT SAMURAI), popular Hong Kong artistes Cecilia Cheung (LOST IN TIME) and Nicholas Tse (NEW POLICE STORY), as well as rising Chinese actor Liu Ye (LAN YU).
Besides the star-studded line-up, director Chen has assembled an impressive crew including Oscar-winning cinematographer Peter Pau (CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON) and production designer Tim Yip (CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON), established music composer Klaus Badelt (CONSTANTINE), leading action choreographers Wei Tung and Dion Lam, and renowned artist Kimiya Masago. In addition, THE PROMISE’s extensive special effects will be created by Hong Kong’s famous Centro Digital Pictures, which was responsible for the visual effects for Stephen Chow’s KUNG FU HUSTLE.
THE PROMISE revolves around a beautiful Princess, a courageous Slave, an ambitious Mighty General, a cunning Duke, whose lives are all intertwined by greed, ambition, loyalty, revenge and the search for true love.
